New School Net - Students at the Pocahontas Area Elementary School will now be able to study weather information and apply it to many different curriculum subjects thanks to a School Net weather station provided by KCCI News Channel 8 and Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative.

Mounted on the roof of the school, the weather station provides real-time data for the students and the meteorologists at KCCI-TV in Des Moines, Iowa. The sensors monitor the temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed, wind direction, dew point, wind-chill and barometric pressure. This information is recorded on a computer and then sent via the Internet to KCCI-TV.

KCCI-TV features the School Net data on five daily newscasts and includes special coverage when areas experience severe weather. The weather data may also be accessed via the Internet through KCCI's website, www.kcci.com.

Tresa Hussong, vice president of customer and corporate relations, Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative, explains the Cooperative's involvement, “This is another way in which we can show our commitment to community. It's a great educational tool and it's so important to bring new technology into our area school systems.

The weather station was presented to the Pocahontas school by Meteorologist John McLaughlin during a taped broadcast on May 28, 2010. Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative and Corn Belt Power Cooperative treated students and school staff to ice cream following the broadcast.
